Speedometer Needle Weaver

by Floyd Goff

Originally published in the Austin-Healey Magazine

After the speedometer on my BN7 developed needle waver I read several articles about the subject. I took the unit out but found none of the causes listed in any of the articles.

I found a little speedometer repair shop on one of my frequent trips to Columbus, Ohio and the owner diagnosed the problem right off. He said most speedometer problems are caused by the cable. After making a new cable, he advised me to use high temperature grease on it, as the watery lubes are useless.

After installing the unit and new cable, I went for a drive. I could not believe how steady the needle was. It had not performed that smoothly in years.

If your speedometer is acting up you may want to check the cable first.
